Many times we don't realize that things have already let us go but we haven't them go. Also, the things we think we are letting go of we ultimately never let go of because we are always intimately connected. We simply just change our focus.
The universe is full of paradoxes. We play these little games with ourselves and pretend we need this person or that thing when ultimately we come to discover this is not true. We only choose people and things because they add flavor to the game.
