True story……
While I was out shopping tonight, I heard a man say…..”pssstttt…say, let me holla at you for a sec”. I noticed the man who was talking and I continued to walk. Then I heard…”say, Lil Mama I like how you wearing dem jeans”. I continued to walk. Finally he caught up with me and asked….”Girl, you can’t hear or sumpin’?”. My response…”On the contrary my Brother. I hear you talking, but you aren’t speaking my language”. He smiled, apologized, extend his hand and introduced himself.
After a few minutes of chatting with him, I realized that he was quite intelligent, well spoken, and polite. So I had to ask him what were the reasons behind his initial greeting. He simply stated….”Cause it works”. Now that got me to thinking and questioning. Does it REALLY work? And if it does, WHO does it work on? The truth is obviously IT DOES WORK. If it didn’t he wouldn’t continue to do it. I’m not a man, so Brothers, please correct me if I’m wrong. I don’t know any man who in an effort to get a woman’s attention continues to do things that he KNOWS DOES NOT WORK. The whole point of him doing it is because he’s tested and tried it and well…..IT WORKS.
The irony about it all is that I hear so many woman complaining about this very thing. They don’t like the ‘cat calls’. They would rather a man approach them, introduce themselves and state their intentions. Finally, I was left with one conclusion. The reason why some men continue to speak to us in this manner is because at least ONE of us ANSWERS TO IT. And as long as we answer to it, guess what….the men will continue to yell out….”Hey, Shawty”.
